James Joseph Powers, Esq., 80, passed away peacefully in his home on May 10, 2017 of Pompton Plains, NJ. Born on October 25, 1936 and raised in the Bronx, NY, the son of James Michael and Margaret (nee Kaley) Powers. He will be greatly missed by his four children: Patricia Ann, Theresa, Kevin (Jennifer Ledwith) and Matthew Jude. He was also the very proud grandfather of Killian, Andrew James and Devin. Mr. Powers is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth (nee Grifferty) Powers in 1993 and son, Stephen Powers in 2006. Jim graduated from Iona College, St. John's Law School, and was a member of the New York State Bar. He was the Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Constitution Reinsurance for 18 years, then had an accomplished freelance career as an arbitrator, umpire and expert witness. Jim was a nationally certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in Nanuet, NY and Ramsey, NJ for over 30 years of service. He taught law in the field of emergency medicine to NYC paramedics for several years. As part of a humanitarian aid group, he helped provide treatment to over 1000 patients in Haiti. He also worked alongside Jimmy Carter building homes for Habitat for Humanity. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus; a co-founder and President of the Epilepsy Society of Southern New York; and a Liturgical and Eucharistic minister at The Church of the Presentation, in Upper Saddle River.

Viewing hours will take place at Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home in Ramsey, NJ from 2-4pm and 7-9pm on Friday, May 19th. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held at The Church of the Presentation, Upper Saddle River, NJ at 10am on Saturday, May 20.
