Leahy, George J., 88, of Mahwah, to be with Jesus, on February 14, 2010. George was born on November 8, 1921 in Jersey City and grew up in Saddle River. He was predeceased by his devoted parents George W. and Rose (nee Bennett) and dear brother, John. Beloved husband to Rose (nee Skarzynski) for 62 years. Loving father to George and wife Patricia of Brigantine, NJ; Gregory, Anthony (Anton), and Geoffrey of Mahwah, NJ; Eric of Hopatcong, NJ; Rose and companion Saad of Fairfield, CT; and Terrence of Meridian, MS. Adored grandfather to Paige, Madison, Corry and Reese. George served his country during World War II in the US Army Air Force 483rd Bomb Group as a B17 flight engineer on 32 missions and was stationed in Foggia, Italy. While injured in combat, he respectfully declined the Purple Heart. Among his athletic accomplishments, George set a new record for the 440-yard run at 54:9 in Scott Field, Illinois. He was employed as a state health and safety inspector and Curtiss-Wright, Lederle, Ford Motor Company, Nu-Car Carriers, and Philips Electronics. George was a member of many organizations: Immaculate Heart of Mary Church parishioner and Men's Club; Knights of Columbus Ramsey charter member and 4th Degree Knight; Holy Name Society; Ancient Order of Hibernians; VFW Post 7124, chaplain; Mahwah Elks Club 1942; and Mahwah Fire Department Company 2, recording secretary. He served his community through volunteer activities, notably the American Red Cross.
The family will receive friends Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Van Emburgh-Sneider-Pernice Funeral Home, 109 Darlington Ave, Ramsey.
The funeral mass will be celebrated Friday 10 AM at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Mahwah.
